What this website measures

This website uses Google Analytics to count visits and to see which pages people read. It sets cookies in your browser, and it sends Google the pages you view, the site or search that sent you here, your device and browser type, and your IP address, from which Google works out an approximate location. Google handles that information for us.

We use it to answer one question: whether this website is useful to the people looking for their town. There is no advertising on this website, no profile is built about you, and nothing is sold or shared with anybody.

How to turn it off

• Your browser can block or clear cookies for this website. Most browsers keep that in their privacy settings.
• Google publishes a Google Analytics opt-out add-on for desktop browsers, which turns the measurement off on every website that uses it.
• Either way, every page here works exactly the same.

The Ask Towncrier panel

If you type a question into the assistant on this website, the question is sent to Anthropic, which writes the answer. The chat is not kept. If you work for a municipality and ask us to get in touch, the contact details you type are emailed to us.

The app is different

Reading notices happens in the app, and the app is not measured this way. The privacy policy is the document for it: no advertising or advertising identifiers, no analytics or tracking SDKs, no location collection, and no sale of anything to anybody.
