About Towncrier

Towncrier is an independent app. It is not a government agency. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by any government, and it does not represent any municipality.

Why Towncrier exists

Municipal notices are legally required to be published, but they are usually published somewhere nobody looks: a newspaper of record, a bulletin board in a hallway that is open Tuesdays, a PDF three clicks deep on a website that was last redesigned in 2016. People miss hearings about their own street.

Publication rules were written when the newspaper was how a town reached everyone. That stopped being true a long time ago and nothing replaced it. The notice runs, the invoice is paid, the file is clean — and the first a resident hears about the rezoning is when the survey stakes go in.

Where the notices come from

Every notice is published by the municipality named on it.

Towncrier does not copy, scrape, re-publish or summarize notices from anywhere else. There is no upstream feed. A notice appears because a member of that municipality’s own staff signed in and published it, and the town named on the notice is its source and its author.

We do not write notices, edit them, or decide what a town publishes.

How a town joins

A town only appears on Towncrier after it asks to and proves it can.

  1. It asks to join

    Towncrier adds one municipality at a time. Before a town is listed, it has to ask to join.

  2. The person asking shows they are authorized

    The person making the request has to show they are authorized to publish on that municipality’s behalf — a clerk, a secretary, or another officer of that body.

  3. We verify it is a real government body

    We verify that the municipality is a real government body and that the request comes from inside it before anything is published.

  4. The municipality issues its own staff accounts

    Accounts for staff are issued by that municipality rather than signed up for publicly.

We do not list towns that have not signed up. No municipality is added without its knowledge, and a town that has not joined does not appear on Towncrier or in the app.

Built to know as little about you as possible

Towncrier is for reading public notices. It is built so that reading one tells us — and your town — as little about you as possible.

From the Towncrier privacy policy:

  • No advertising, and no advertising identifiers.
  • No analytics or tracking SDKs.
  • No location collection. The app never asks for your location.
  • No sale or sharing of anything with anybody. There is no third party to share with.
